LNet local dissemination event: introducing the social enterprise and innovation toolkits to the London audience

GLE organised a local event in London on January 31st 2006, in order to involve the London social and economic stakeholders in the development of toolkits currently prepared by the European partners as final outputs of their project. These toolkits are designed to support policy makers and local practitioners working towards the promotion of social enterprise, innovation and entrepreneurship in deprived urban areas, as a route out of economic and social disadvantage, promoting positive and sustainable local development. Social enterprise and innovation were the two themes scrutinised during this workshop.

Participants commented on the three sections of each toolkit, reviewing and adding, in the light of their own experiences, to the work developed by the LNet partners. The first part of the toolkits focuses on the analysis of the barriers to social enterprise or innovation in deprived areas as well as the causes of these barriers and the potential solutions to them. Based on this, top tips are given to policy makers and practitioners and focus on ‘tried and tested’ methods of overcoming specific barriers. Finally, the toolkits present a range of case studies demonstrating how policy initiatives and activities have overcome specific barriers to social enterprise and innovation, highlighting positive solutions to specific issues and their transferable elements.
