The Milano
Metropoli Agenzia di Sviluppo is a private-public company.
It was founded in 1996 through an initiative of the Municipality
of Sesto San Giovanni with the Municipalities of Bresso, Cinisello
Balsamo, Cologno Monzese, and the Province of Milan, as well
as the Chambers of Commerce of Milan and Finlombarda and private
partners.
Throughout
the 20th century North Milan was one of the most important
Lombard and Italian industrial centres, but towards the end
of the century it began to suffer from the crisis hitting
all major industrial areas, particularly in traditional manufacturing
such as electro-mechanics and heavy metal. This led to the
closure of big factories like Falck, Marelli and Breda, thousands
of job losses and the redundancy of about 3 million m2 of
industrial area.
Milano
Metropoli Agenzia di Sviluppo was founded to re-launch North
Milan and to transform the crisis into a real chance to regenerate
the territory socially, economically and environmentally.
Milano Metropoli Agenzia di Sviluppo is a streamlined structure
and not bureaucratic; it finances itself through public and
private resources for the development of projects aimed at
the urban and productive transformation of North Milan.
Milano
Metropoli Agenzia di Sviluppo promotes these projects and
initiatives for, or in partnership with, the main actors involved
in territorial development: local municipalities, the Province
of Milan, the Region of Lombardy and private operators.
From an
operational point of view, the activities of Milano Metropoli
Agenzia di Sviluppo are based on 2 important principals: cooperation
and partnership. Cooperation is the basis for the Forum per
lo Sviluppo del Nord Milano (Development Forum of North Milan)
an advisory body where the main socio-economic actors of the
territory discuss the prospects and the strategic directions
of the development of the area. Through partnerships, Milano
Metropoli Agenzia di Sviluppo has developed a close network
of local, national, and international relationships which
are very useful for promoting initiatives and projects.
